What is Otoplasty?
Otoplasty or cosmetic ear surgery is a surgical procedure used to change the ears’ shape, size or position in order to make them proportional to the shape and size of the face and head. It may be done on people bothered by ears sticking out too much from the head, or to restore deformed ears due to an injury or birth defect. This procedure may be performed at any age after the ears have reached their full size, usually at age 6 trough adulthood.
Otoplasty is done with sedation, local anesthesia or general anesthesia (for more complex revision). Surgeons may use techniques based on the kind of correction needed which will determine where the incisions or cuts will be made. Incisions may be made on the back of the ears or within the inner creases of the ears. The doctor will remove excess cartilage and skin; fold the cartilage into the proper position and secure and closed with internal stitches. The procedure will take about two hours. After the procedure, the ears will be covered in bandages for protection and support.
The doctor will remove the bandages in about 4 days after the surgery. The ears will be swollen and red and the patient will need to wear a loose headband to cover the ears at night for a period of two to six weeks. The changes resulting from otoplasty are permanent.
Choosing the Best Doctor
By any standards, one would most likely choose a doctor or surgeon with the proper license, board certification, accreditation, training certifications, etc. to at least be the first criterion to be satisfied. After establishing these credentials, one should assess the doctor or surgeon based on his knowledge, experience and expertise in the procedure. Apart from these, one should also look for the willingness and openness of the doctor or surgeon to listen to the patient on what they want from the procedure. The surgeon should be able to explicitly discuss the pros and cons (if any) of the desired changes of the patient.
Additionally, the patients can extend their due diligence by asking other doctors or surgeons, patients who have undergone the procedure about the quality of work rendered by your target surgeon. A good plastic or cosmetic surgeon will always be heard of in the medical and plastic surgery community.
Why Do Otoplasty in the Philippines
Patients who are desiring to have otoplasty will in all likelihood check the internet for the prevailing rates or fees for the procedure overseas. This kind of check will produce results that will show that otoplasty in the Philippines is way cheaper than any other country providing the same service. Where other Southeast Asian countries charge at about US$600 for the procedure, most clinics in the Philippines charge at under $1000 for the entire procedure.
While cost is a prime consideration in the decision on where to have the cosmetic surgery or procedure, another important factor to consider is the surgery facility. In the Philippines, whether it’s done in a hospital or a private surgery clinic, state-of-the-art surgery facilities are used for the procedure.
Lastly, the country has a long roster of highly qualified plastic or cosmetic surgeon, with many years of experience. This alone is a good enough reason to influence the decision of having the procedure done in the Philippines.
